In a piece of news not many saw coming four-division world champion Adrien Broner, will now be promoted by Don King. This comes on the heels of an ill-fated partnership with BLK Prime that was supposed to afford Broner astronomical finical gain, and three fights in 2023. When his last fight against Michael Williams Jr., fell through Broner announced via Instagram he was going to walk away from his deal with BLK Prime.
The wording of the press release involved a phrase ripped from the mid-90s “bad boy of boxing” Adrien Broner. It felt as though my mind raced to Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, and his label which had so much success, but it appears the marketing for Broner will be the troubles he has been through in the past decade.
Broner last fought on February 20, 2021, and won a unanimous decision against Jovanie Santiago at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, but Broner looked like a shell of the man who looked like a potential generational great when he stopped Antonio DeMarco. Broner has been very inactive, and made the news for the wrong reasons rather than the right ones. Hopefully, now with a promoter, Broner can at least focus on his career inside the ring for the time being.
“I [had] a fantastic camp with Kevin Cunningham, and I can hardly wait to get back into the ring again,” said Broner. “Winning a world title and constantly defending or unifying the titles is what I am aiming to do.”
Although no word was given on a potential return, King has been running pay-per-view online shows with Jonathan Guidry, and Trevor Bryan over the past couple of years in Florida, as well as a cruiserweight title fight in Ohio. It appears that Broner will be the marquee attraction, and per the press release King appears more than willing to work with any promoter.
